The Tapestry Singers is free to join. They rehearse from 7 pm to 9 pm every
Wednesday at Kalles Junior High School. Males and females are welcome.
The Tapestry Singers sing from September to May and take the summer off.
In addition to the yearly three concerts, the Tapestry Singers also sing for
Veteran’s and Memorial Day and every November at the University Place
Presbyterian church sponsored by Good Samaritan and Multi-Care for those
that are dealing with grief over the holidays. Jean commented: “We bring our
programs to senior centers and retirement homes, for example, the Tacoma
Lutheran Home and Merrill Gardens in Puyallup. Basically, whoever wants
us to sing and we can, we will.”
Maynard Hedegaard, director for the Tapestry Singers Board, provided further
details on the spring concert, “Our theme for the spring concert is “Movies
and memories” and all songs we will be singing will be from musicals and
movies for example, “Oh, what a beautiful morning,” by Richard Rodgers
lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, “The Surrey with the fringe on top” by Richard
Rodgers lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, “People will say we’re in love” from
the “Oklahoma” musical, and some pieces by George Gershwin from the
opera “Porgy and Bess”, the songs: “Summertime,” and “I got plenty o’nuttin’"
a piece from Walt Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” “Sunrise, Sunset” from
the play
“Fiddler on the Roof” “Climb every mountain” from the “Sound of Music”,
“Bridge over troubled water” by Paul Simon, and “Some enchanted evening”
by the musical movie “South Pacific.”
Jean commented on what she thought of the Tapestry Singers: “They are like
another family for people because we’re not such a large enough group that
we’re a face in the crowd. We care about each other and we’re friends and
family with each other. We don’t belong because we want to be in a group,
but because we sing and enjoy the community and don’t care about making a
CD or tours.”
Jean discussed the best thing about the Tapestry Singers, “I really like the
music that Maynard picks out, it’s very thoughtful and he’s very knowledge-
able at it. He picks out things very deliberately. I love to sing with the group
and enjoy our rehearsals; we can laugh with each other.
For awhile, we did offer scholarships to children at Emerald Ridge High
School and we haven’t been able to the last few years because of our funding,
which has taken a hit, but we hope to resume that.”

“We are a community choir that wants to serve and give back to the
community in the form of musical concerts. We certainly would welcome
anyone that has some musical experience to come and join our group,”
Maynard concluded.
